What Makes a Fragrance For Him or For Her? Let’s Talk Unisex Scents.
Walk into almost any fragrance department and you’ll still see the familiar categories:
For Him. For Her.
And honestly, those labels can be helpful. If you already know you love traditionally masculine woods and aromatics, or you always reach for feminine florals and gourmands, they can point you in the right direction pretty quickly. But they don’t tell the whole story.
Because people wear fragrance in much more interesting ways than the signs over the counter suggest. Women wear fragrances marketed to men. Men wear fragrances marketed to women. And some scents are intentionally created for everyone.
So what actually makes a fragrance “for him” or “for her”?
And where do unisex scents fit into all of this?
Let’s talk about it.
First: What Actually Makes a Fragrance Masculine or Feminine?
There isn’t one ingredient that automatically makes a fragrance masculine or feminine. It’s usually the full composition, plus years of fragrance tradition and marketing, that shapes how we perceive it.
Certain notes have historically shown up more often in fragrances marketed to men: woods, leather, tobacco, herbs, spices, marine notes. Others have traditionally been associated more heavily with women’s perfume: florals, fruits, vanilla, powdery notes and sweet gourmands.
But those lines have never been absolute. Vanilla can be deep and smoky. Leather can be soft. Rose can be spicy. Woods can be creamy. And once those notes start blending together, things get a lot more interesting.
Summer Mink Is a Perfect Place to Start
One of our newest additions fits this conversation perfectly. Drake Summer Mink Type M was built around contrast. Fresh citrus and aromatic notes meet rose and jasmine. Soft florals sit beside musk, woods and amber. Even the name is a contrast: summer and mink.
Summer Mink is a great example of what modern unisex fragrance can look like. It doesn’t try to smell completely neutral. It still has warmth, softness, freshness and personality. It simply gives different wearers room to bring out different parts of the fragrance. And we love that.
Women Are Wearing Valentino Uomo Born in Roma Too
Now let’s go in the other direction.
Valentino Uomo Born in Roma is marketed toward men, but plenty of women love wearing that style of fragrance too. And once you look at the scent profile, it really isn’t surprising.
The Born in Roma Uomo family combines aromatic and woody notes with warmer, sweeter elements that can make the fragrance feel polished, cozy and sensual rather than strictly masculine. This is especially good for someone who loves warm vanilla fragrances but wants something with a little more depth.
The vanilla sweetness sits against darker aromatic and woody notes, creating something that feels smooth and rich rather than sugary. A woman who usually wears warm gourmands may find plenty to love here. A man who prefers sweeter fragrances probably will too. Same fragrance. Different reasons for loving it.
Al-Rehab Golden Sand Type Shows How Easily Sweet and Woody Can Meet
Al-Rehab Golden Sand Type is another fragrance that makes traditional gender categories feel less important. It combines caramel, vanilla, amber and agarwood, giving you sweetness and warmth alongside a deeper woody base. And depending on the wearer, different parts of that combination can stand out.
If you love gourmands, you may immediately notice the caramel and vanilla. If you gravitate toward richer woods and amber, you may connect more with that side of it. Neither person is wearing it “wrong.” Golden Sand is simply one of those scents that gives you both.
And that’s becoming a bigger part of how people shop for fragrance now. We’re not always looking for something that fits perfectly into a category. Sometimes we just want something that smells really, really good.
Lost Cherry Has Been Crossing the Aisle for Years
Then there’s Tom Ford Lost Cherry Type W. Cherry, almond, rose, jasmine and vanilla might sound like an obviously feminine combination at first. But the fragrance has a darker side too. The cherry can feel rich and boozy. The almond adds a slightly bitter edge. Tonka, patchouli and woods keep the sweetness grounded.
That balance is a big reason Lost Cherry works for so many different fragrance tastes. Someone who loves sweet fruity scents can enjoy it. Someone who prefers darker, warmer fragrances can find something in it too. And men wearing sweet or fruity scents isn’t nearly as unusual as it once seemed.
Sometimes a Fragrance Changes Depending on Who’s Wearing It
This is one of our favorite parts of fragrance. Two people can put on the exact same scent and notice completely different things. Body heat, skin chemistry, application and the products you layer underneath can all affect how fragrance develops. One person may bring out more sweetness. Another might get more woods. Someone else gets a floral note you barely noticed on yourself.
That doesn’t mean the fragrance has magically changed categories. It just means fragrance is personal. And fragrance oils make that especially interesting because they sit closely against the skin and mingle with your natural scent. So if you love how something smells on somebody else, definitely try it on yourself too. Your skin gets a vote.
Unisex Doesn’t Mean Neutral
This is another misconception worth clearing up. A unisex fragrance does not have to smell like it was designed to sit perfectly in the middle. It can be sweet. Floral. Woody. Dark. Soft. Bold.
The goal isn’t to remove personality so everyone can wear it. The goal is simply to create something that doesn’t depend on gender to make sense. That’s why a fragrance like Summer Mink can contain florals and woods and still feel completely natural on different people. The same is true of plenty of fragrances that aren’t officially labeled unisex at all.
So Do “For Him” and “For Her” Labels Still Matter?
They can. Think of them as helpful guides rather than strict rules. If you usually love traditional men’s fragrances, that category gives you a useful place to start.
If you know you love feminine florals, fruits or gourmands, the women’s section can point you toward scents you’re more likely to enjoy. There’s nothing wrong with having those preferences. The fun starts when you give yourself permission to explore beyond them too.
Wear What Smells Like You
Fragrance is one of the most personal things we put on. It can match your mood. Your style. Your memories. Your personality. Or simply what you felt like smelling that day.
So yes, the labels can help. But they don’t get the final say. Your nose does. If a fragrance smells amazing on you, wear it proudly whether it came from the men’s side, the women’s side or somewhere right in the middle.
Because smelling good has never needed that many rules.
